CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Mobile Life ambulance service had attended the scene of the crash and taken Wendy and Samantha to St. Luke's hospital ER in the city of Newburgh. One of the paramedics told Jack Samantha's nose didn't look broken, but he was more concerned about Wendy.

'So this truck,' the police officer said to Jack, 'did it have any plates on it?'

'I didn't see any.'

'You mean you couldn't make it out?'

'No, I mean, it wasn't displaying any. He had taken them off.'

'So you saw it was a man?'

'Just generalising. He or she, took them off.'

'And the windows were blacked out?'

'Yes.'

'And you're sure it was a Dodge?'

'An old one, but yes, a Dodge.'

A few cars had turned up along with the ambulance, including State Police cruisers. Orange County 911 dispatch had a computer system that sent the message to the nearest police cruisers, whether it was a State Trooper or a Town patrol.

'Those guys will be assisting us with the accident recreation.'

'It wasn't an accident.'

'We're treating it as one until we can look into this further.'

'To see if I made this up, you mean?'

'Not at all.' He turned round when another unmarked cruiser pulled in. 'Here's a detective now.'

As luck would have it, the detective was the one who Jack had seen the other night at the garage fire.

'My name's Sergeant Chris Nolan, Town of Newburgh PD. Didn't I see you at the garage fire the other night?'

'Yes you did.'

'The retired detective, right?'

'Correct again.'

'So what's going on here?'

'Somebody tried to kill us.' He was expecting scepticism, and it might have happened, but Jack sensed this detective knew he wasn't dealing with just any Joe off the street.

'So run it by me.'

Jack looked at the man who had his badge clipped to his belt, in front of the gun that sat in its holster. He wore sunglasses, even though it wasn't that sunny outside, and was chewing gum.

Jack ran through what had happened. He didn't mention he thought he knew who had tried to run him off the road.

'You cut somebody off at the lights or something?'

'No. We just left Wendy Haines' house. Chip's wife. You know him, don't you?'

'Of course.' He looked around him then back at Jack. 'So, if it wasn't road rage, what's your gut telling you?'

'I have no idea. We just came from Scotland to help Wendy. She's my girlfriend's sister.'

'Well, obviously somebody's mad at you if it's not random.'

No kidding.

'I can assure you I haven't deliberately pissed off anybody since I've been here.' Which wasn't quite true; he hadn't made a new friend in Chip.

'A tow truck is coming to take it away to our pound. I'll have somebody take some of the grey paint chips off it.'

Jack looked at the creased side of the bright red Tahoe and was glad the car wasn't his. 'I've called Enterprise and they're bringing another one out to me.'

'Okay. We'll be a while here so if the guy comes back, then we'll deal with him, but he's probably long gone now.'

I wish he would come back, Jack thought.
